Keep Your Older TV Setup: AkiPlay Supports the First-Generation Fire TV Cube and Android TV
You do not always need a new streaming device to enjoy a new TV app. AkiPlay supports the first-generation Fire TV Cube and compatible Android TV televisions and boxes, giving you another way to use the setup you already own.
Perhaps your Cube has been sitting beside the television for years. Perhaps your Android TV is still working well, and you would rather spend your time choosing something to watch than shopping for a replacement. Those are exactly the kinds of everyday setups we want AkiPlay to work with.
Yes, the first Fire TV Cube is included
We checked AkiPlay on a first-generation Fire TV Cube. During that testing, we found and fixed a problem that could close the app when opening a series. With the fix installed, we searched for Banshee and opened its details twice successfully. Its four seasons appeared, along with the episodes in the first season.
For you, the takeaway is simple: the first-generation Cube is supported, and the latest AkiPlay update includes a fix for opening series on older Fire TV devices. You can search your own library, open a show and choose an available episode without replacing your Cube just to use AkiPlay.
That check confirms this particular series-details flow. It does not mean every channel, movie or episode from every provider has been tested. What you can watch still depends on the source you connect.
What about an Android TV?
AkiPlay also supports compatible Android TVs and Android TV boxes. If Android TV is built into your television, you may be able to use AkiPlay directly on the TV. If you use a separate Android TV box, you can keep that box connected to your existing television.
The current Android TV app requires Android 6.0 or newer. You do not need to understand the software behind that number. It is simply the minimum version your device needs to install the app. You can usually find your device’s version in its Settings, under About or Device Preferences.
A television being a “smart TV” does not automatically mean it runs Android TV. Check the name of the TV system before downloading. The Android TV download is intended for Android TV devices; other TV systems can require a different app.
A quick note about “first generation”
Amazon has used “first generation” for several different products. Here, we mean the first-generation Fire TV Cube, released in 2018. We do not mean the original Fire TV box or the original Fire TV Stick from 2014.
Those original 2014 models do not meet the current AkiPlay TV app’s minimum requirements. If you are unsure which one you own, open Settings, choose My Fire TV and look under About. Amazon’s device guide can help you identify the model.
A small difference in the product name matters here. A Fire TV Cube and a Fire TV Stick are separate device families, even when both are described as first generation.
Getting started is straightforward
Start with the current download from the AkiPlay website. On a compatible Fire TV, you can use the Downloader app to get the installer. Our Fire TV installation guide walks through the buttons and screens step by step.
After installing AkiPlay, open it and add your own supported source. This is the service or playlist that supplies your channels, movies and shows. Have the details from your provider ready, and enter them exactly as supplied.
AkiPlay is the player that helps you browse and watch. It does not include an IPTV subscription or provide a library of channels and films. Your own source determines what appears in the app.
If you already have AkiPlay installed, use the latest available update. The older-device series fix is included in version 1.52. An update to an existing Release installation should not require you to remove the app first.
What to expect from an older device
Older hardware can still be useful, but it may take a little longer to load a large library than a newer box. Give the app time to finish preparing your channels and shows, especially when adding a source for the first time.
If a picture pauses or takes time to start, the device is only one part of the setup. Your internet connection, your provider and the particular stream can all affect the experience. Try another item from the same source before deciding that your television or Cube needs replacing.
You can also keep some space free on the device and close other apps you are not using. These are simple ways to give an older setup more room to work. They are useful habits, rather than a promise that every stream will behave the same.
Enjoy the television you already have
A working television and a familiar remote are a good place to start. With a supported device, the latest AkiPlay app and your own source, you can explore your library from the sofa.
For owners of the first-generation Fire TV Cube, there is no need to assume your device is too old for AkiPlay. For Android TV owners, check your TV or box’s version, install the appropriate app and follow the setup prompts.
Get AkiPlay or browse our installation guides when you are ready.
